Editing
“Prepare (written material) for publication by correcting, condensing, or otherwise modifying it.”
Synonyms that fit my skills set – correct the work presented, check it from top to bottom, copyedit and improve it based on the piece’s audience and goals, amend it, fact check, and polish it for publication. If an article needs only 600 words and the writer has 800. I will make it fit and still sound the same. If research is lacking or incorrect, I can find it. If the piece looks as if someone’s toes wrote it on the keyboard instead of their fingers, I can correct it. And I can do it under the pressure of a deadline.
Writing
“The activity or skill of marking coherent words on paper and composing text; the activity or occupation of composing text for publication.”
I can put my thoughts into words, and I can take your words and make them sing a better song. I can ghostwrite your book, sharpen your speech, write your brochures and blogs. I am not an advertiser or marketer; I am a wordsmith. I have finished my first novel, a three-book series. I am a prolific writer. I am cutting it down to prepare for a professional developmental edit. I love the world of words that I can create for you.
Proofreading
“Carefully checking for errors in a text before it is published or shared. It is the very last stage of the content submission process when you fix minor spelling and punctuation mistakes, typos, formatting issues and inconsistencies.”
My middle name when reading editing text on its way to publication is Hawkeye. Proofreading is not editing; it is that last eye on the prize. It can find ‘teh’ that was meant to be ‘the.’ Proofreading finds that pesky missing word: The girl went to store to buy a banana. When reading and re-reading a text, it is easy to miss the word that should come before the word store. I edit and write but prefer proofreading in many ways. It is singular work done inside your mind. There are software assistants for proofreading, and that is a good thing. Still, finding the buried treasure of a missing period or a repeated paragraph or duplicate photo in a magazine draft is magic.
Recent Columns & Articles
The columns and articles in this section are
reasonably current. I will be inserting new material every other month or so.
These items are being/have been shopped around to newspapers and magazines for
publication. If you use my work or excerpts from my work, please give me the
writing credit. If you have any feedback on the points I make, contact me by
email.
If there is a subject you’d like me to write about, let me know. I am creative, but I can’t think of everything by myself! Happy Reading.
Blog
I began this blog in 2012 to promote tourism to
Namibia. Back then, I had just started my own tourism consultancy company and
wanted to document my travels and discoveries. My clients loved being able to
check in on my work on their contracts.
Blogging is time-consuming when professional and family obligations weigh heavily. Even posting sporadically gives a snapshot of the subject matter displayed. I can produce content for your blog as a part of my overall editing and creative writing contract.
